The research reactor JRR-3 at the Nuclear Science Research Institute of Japan Atomic Energy Agency resumed its operation in February 2021 for the first time in 10 years. After commissioning, neutron beam experimental apparatus and irradiation facilities were used from July to November, and the operation in 2021 was completed as planned. During this period, Ir-192 and Au-198 were produced and supplied for therapeutic use, and test irradiation for the production of Mo-99 was performed. This is resumption of radioisotope production using nuclear reactors in Japan, which had stopped after the Great East Japan Earthquake. This article introduces future efforts of radioisotope production for medical applications in JRR-3.

Production yields of these radionuclides were quantified by irradiating 55.4 g of natural zinc with accelerator neutrons. Clinically suitable Cu and Cu yields were estimated by experimental based numerical simulations using 100 g of enriched Zn and Zn, respectively, and elevated neutron fluxes from 40 MeV, 2 mA deuterons. A combined thermal- and resin-separation method was developed to isolate Cu and Cu from zinc, resulting in 73% separation efficiency and 97% zinc recovery. Such methods can provide large scale production of Cu and Cu for clinical applications.

Therefore, we have launched a research project on deuteron nuclear data, which is composed of measurements, theoretical model code development, cross section evaluation, and application to production of radioisotopes for medical use. Our goal is to develop a state-of-art deuteron nuclear data library up to 200 MeV necessary for the design of accelerator neutron sources with deuteron beam. The present status is reported in the presentation.

High uptake of Cu was observed in the tumor as well as in the liver and kidney which are the major organs for copper metabolism. The result showing Cu accumulation in the tumor suggests that CuCl can be a potential radionuclide agent for cancer radiotherapy. It would also encourage further studies on the therapeutic effect in small animals using an increased dose of Cu produced by the Zn()Cu reaction using intense neutrons available at present.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.
